I have compiled this article for anyone who is interested in facts of wildlife, history of our planet in total. Purposely Information is given in Tabular form to facilitate the comparison of the hugeness of the creatures to the human size. Also, I have tried to stress on the varieties of abilities the animals possess. There are very amazing facts about wildlife which will astonish you. Mostly this article is about our ancient wildlife & it starts with Dinosaurs facts.
Today we see innumerable varieties of insects, birds & animals besides human beings on the earth. Similarly, there are various kinds of trees, plants & bushes. All of them come under the category of living beings,
To study the origin of life on the earth, the scientists study the fossils of those animals, trees & plants which lived on the earth millions of years ago.
Excavations carried out at various places on the earth have made available fossils, rocks & bones which throw significant light on the existence of living beings of ancient times.
I am trying to compile such information in one place for my readers.
MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO…
When the biggest EVER beasts ruled the Earth?
Let’us step back in time to when massive teeth & claws got you a long way in the prehistoric ecosystem….
Carnivores are meat-eating animals either catch prey or scavenge. Their teeth are adapted for piercing, cutting and tearing.
LARGEST CARNIVORES OF THEM ALL
The name Spinosaurus means “spine lizard” & it is likely you have seen this ferocious-looking Dino as the star “villain“ in the movie Jurassic Park III. Its long, narrow skull & jaws have led scientists to believe that, like a crocodile, it could have lived & hunted near rivers.
The first remains of this Dino were found in Egypt 101 years ago in 1012. To say we love dinosaurs is a HUGE understatement, so here are the most successful Dino movies of all time……..
BIGGEST DINOSAUR MOVIES
We think Jurassic Park is an awesome movie, & the velociraptor was one of the coolest things in it. But did you know that the velociraptor was really about 6.9 feet long? The one in the movie were based more on its cousin, Deinonychus, shown above. This beast was over 9.8 feet in length.
BIGGEST IN THE AIR
Swooping through the air, armed with awe-inspiring wingspans & colossal beaks, these monstrous flying reptiles conquered the skies in prehistoric times.
Ornithocheirus had an absolutely HUGE beak n relation to the size of its body. Those teeth would have been perfect for snapping up fish from the choppy waves. This beast looks a bit like a monster fish-eating bird.
If you ever visit the natural history museum in Frankfurt, Germany, you will come face to face with the biggest reconstruction of an Argentinosaurus.
BIGGEST IN THE AIR
I gave you the rundown of the 10 biggest meat-eaters earlier, but let’us not forget those vegetarian Dino………
DIPLODOCUS is vegetarians having small, peg-like teeth, hugely long neck & tail. Loads of fossils are found & is one of the most studied.
LONGEST HERBIVORES ON LAND
I am a pretty good swimmer, but millions of years ago
These guys were the absolute masters of the oceans…..
LARGEST OCEAN REPTILES
One of prehistory’ us most formidable marine carnivores LIOPLEURODON, mentioned in the above list, was part of the plesiosaur family. Its four huge flippers would have provided incredible acceleration to hunt prey.
It is not always the size of the weapon that makes it lethal as these dangerous horns, teeth & claws show…….
Bet, you thought this dude Nedoceratops shown above was a Triceratops….Nope!
Ned is related, hence the terrifying horns big beak & the armor-plating. But all the ‘tops family were actually vegetarian. They grazed on the low ground-based plants, using that beak & jaws lined with hundreds of grinding molar teeth to mash ferns & leaves to a pulp.
Paleontologist (a scientist who studies prehistoric life)
Othniel Marsh made a bit mistake in 1887 when he first thought a Triceratops skull was a kind of bison, an American buffalo
Deinonychus means “Terrible Claw “, & with its 5-inch central sickle-like claw on his foot, that is perfect description! Recent studies on its jaws suggest it had a similar bite force to a modern-day crocodile, too.
Million years ago, if you were not big, bony or tooled up with dental weaponry, you had no chance in the ocean.
Further, are 10 MONSTROUS fish.
Dunkleosteus is from the beastly fish species called Placoderm. These guys did not have teeth; they had jagged,
shearing bony plates, instead. Imagine a mouth with guillotine inside it………
Fish have evolved & adapted to virtually all the fresh & saltwater habitat of the world. Fish are cold-blooded vertebrates found in seas, oceans & fresh waters. They breathe using gills. They move through water with the aid of fins. In most cases, their skins are covered with scales.
The COOLEST BEASTS UNEARTHED
One of the amazing talents some animal have is “echolocation” that is using their sound to “see “other animals & obstacles.
Dolphins & Whales use echolocation to find food & chat with one another. You would have heard them on nature documentaries with their series of whistles & clicks. When they make a sound, it bounces back through their surroundings & analyzed by their brain, How cool is that?
Think that all Bats use echolocation?
They don’t. There are two kinds of Bats: micro bats & megabits.
All micro bats echolocate but of the megabits, just the Egyptian fruit bat has this amazing skill.
It only eats fruits but does use the skill for navigation & communication.
Monarch butterfly migrates across thousands of miles.
But this ISN’T the amazing thing about it. What is?
Well, it only lives for a few months. This means that after a bunch of miles, it lay eggs, dies, and them its young continue the migration route! How do they know where to go?
Animals have developed abilities that allow them to live even in extreme conditions. The emperor penguin, for example, can breed in the severe Antarctic winter. Males are able to incubate the female’us single egg with external temperatures as low as -60 Deg. Centigrade, surviving safely on fat reserves in the body for 62 to 67 days without a break.
In the animal kingdom, you need a lot more than big teeth & claws to survive. These incredible life forms have been around longer time than dinosaurs, & they are still going strong…..
We often think “living dinosaurs ” are things like crocodiles. However, there are life forms that have remained unchanged for much, much longer……Just like…
The oldest fossilized evidence of prehistoric jellyfish was found by the University of Utah’us Richard D. Jarrard & Susan Halgedahl. What is mind-blowing is that the fossil is incredibly similar to the jellyfish that we see in our oceans today.
OLDEST SURVIVING SPECIES
If we are being specific, technically, the Horseshoe Crab, shown above, is not a crab at all. It is more closely related to the likes of the scorpion & spider. It looks like a stingray tank, doesn’t it?
But that spiny-looking tail is not a poisonous at all, it is just used to help move the Horseshoe Crab along. The tail is also handy to help right the crab if it gets stuck on its back. When it comes to swimming, this crab can happily travel upside-down, using its legs & claws to propel it as well.
HARDEST TO DESTROY
The Cockroach, yuck!
It scavenges & feeds on most things & can live for ages without food or water. Nuclear radiation is not much of a problem, either. It also adapts to pesticides so quickly that humans have trouble staying ahead of the battle.
BACK FROM THE DEAD
Many species that were thought extinct have been found alive & kicking! These “rediscovered “creatures made their comeback on our planet….
Since these cute little Fury-like primates have been rediscovered there has been a boom of interest in the mouse-sized animal. You can even find Pygmy Tarsier fan clubs online, which have been set up for supporters of this struggling species to get together and help spread the Pygmy Tarsier word.
BACK FROM THE DEAD
A hundred years ago, overhunting & the introduction of alien species were the causes of most extinction. Today, the biggest threat is habitat loss. Demands for timber & land to feed expanding human populations mean that forests & other natural habitats are disappearing faster than ever.
The first major step towards nature conservation was national parks have been set up all over the world. They protect many of the planets’us most biologically important & vulnerable habitats from human settlement & agriculture.
SIZING THINGS UP
They don’t have the luxury of electric toothbrushes, but that does not stop this animal’us chopper us from growing to monstrous sizes…..
When it comes to Shark’us teeth, this guy has MORE than got it covered. Not only are the teeth
serrated & big, but the shark replaces any damaged or lost teeth regularly, in fact, it can go through 1000 each year, as new teeth are in multiple rows, ready to rotate into place when one is broken away. No wonder this is such a formidable flesh-tearing fish.
Warthog lives in groups in Africa, weighs around 113 Kgs. His diet is berries, dead animals, grass & insects. They are fast sprinting & have tusks for self-protection.
The Walrus’s tusks are used to carve holes in the ice & also to help it gets out of the water, but they are
also perfect for fighting. When it comes to choosing girlfriends, the male Walrus is not shy about getting physical to prove who is the toughest & the coolest potential mate. This takes place with the clash of tusks to prove which one is “the man “.in the walrus herd…
The largest land animal is the African Elephant. The biggest recorded specimen is thought to have weighed 12 tonnes.
The Kodiak bear, from Alaska, is the largest land carnivore. Members of this race of Brown bears can weigh over half a tone & stand 3.7 meters (12Feet) tall.
The largest animal that actively hunts prey is the sperm whale. It can be 26 meters long (85 Feet) & weigh up to 50 tonnes. The whale shark reaches lengths of 12 meters (40 Feet).
The saltwater crocodile from Asia & the Pacific is the largest living reptile, at around 6 meters (20 Feet) long & weighing up to 1.5 tonnes. The longest is South-east Asia’s reticulated python which can be 10 meters (33 Feet) long.
The largest living bird is the ostrich, which can grow to 2.7 meters (8 Feet 10 Inch) tall.
The blue whale is the biggest living mammal & probably the largest animal ever. The heaviest specimen ever recorded weighed 190 tonnes, while the longest measured 33.5 meters
STRONGEST ANIMALS (Relative to size)
All creatures, great or small animals, have colonized in virtually every environment on earth, from mountain peaks to the depths of the ocean. This had led to the evolution of an incredible variety of body shapes & life strategies to cope with the conditions those environments impose.
For example, it may be a Beetle but do not underestimate this little guy – it is the strongest creature on the planet. The Rhinoceros Beetle can lift not 50 times, not 500 times, but a staggering 850 times its body weight. Imagine carrying 850 people on your back……
The Anaconda is an incredibly powerful beast & happily takes on wild pigs, jaguars & caimans, which it crushes them, swallow whole!
With their powerful jaws, claws & body mass, if you go down to the woods today, you wouldn’t want to come face-to-face with these guys
With 8 inch claws, it is no wonder the Grizzly Bear is a predator we should be wary of. Don’t worry, though, because it actually eats fish, and those claws come in handy for tearing off bark to find bugs, too. This bear is also more likely to stand up tall, often over 10 Feet & roar as a warning, before using its paws as a means of defending itself.
